Former Argentine foreign minister Diana Mondino publicly distanced herself from President Javier Milei over the so-called Libra cryptocurrency scandal, saying there are “two possibilities: either he is not very smart or he is a kind of corrupt person.” In an interview broadcast by Al Jazeera English on 7 August, Mondino was pressed about Milei’s 14 February post that urged followers to buy the Libra token, a promotion that was followed by a steep price collapse. Interviewer Mehdi Hasan cited investor losses of about US$250 million and questioned why the president had endorsed the asset. Mondino replied that someone may have advised Milei poorly but added that, if wrongdoing is proven, “he will have to go to prison someday.” The comments mark one of the strongest public rebukes of Milei by a former cabinet member and reignite scrutiny of the administration’s ties to the failed cryptocurrency.
