Netflix has officially incorporated generative artificial intelligence (AI) into its content production for the first time, using the technology to create visual effects (VFX) in the Argentine sci-fi series "El Eternauta." Co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that the AI-generated sequence, depicting a building collapse, was completed ten times faster than traditional VFX workflows would allow and at a lower cost, which was crucial given the show's limited budget. Netflix utilized AI video generation software from the startup Runway AI to achieve this milestone. Sarandos emphasized that the company views generative AI as an opportunity to enhance creativity and improve the quality of films and series, not merely as a cost-cutting tool. Additionally, Netflix is exploring other applications of generative AI to improve user experience, such as enabling viewers to search for content using spoken words. This move marks a notable shift in Netflix's production strategy and reflects a broader industry trend, with other companies like Disney also experimenting with Runway AI's tools. While the use of AI has sparked discussions about its impact on human creativity and artists, Netflix maintains that AI-powered tools serve to assist creators rather than replace them.
"Netflix, $NFLX, admits it used generative AI in a big sci-fi hit to cut costs," per the Verge.
