Venture capital funding has seen a significant decline across various regions in Q2 2024. Austin raised only $1.3B-$1.4B so far this year, a decrease from $2.7B in H1 2023 and $3.2B in H1 2022. Asia-based startups raised $14.6B in Q2 2024, down 24% from Q1 and 32% year-over-year, with the number of funding deals down 15% from Q1 and 27% YoY. African startups also experienced a 57% drop in venture capital funding. In the US, the SF Bay Area led with $18.7B in Q2 2024, followed by New York with $16.6B and Boston with $3.7B. Austin raised $0.6B across 74 deals. NYC surpassed SF in the number of seed deals with 227 compared to 210, though SF still leads in overall seed-stage funding when including SAFEs. NYC's seed deal growth is 4X over 13 years, while SF's is 2X over the same period.
Seed-stage is still bigger in SF than in NYC. Data for 2024. Includes priced AND SAFE rounds over $2 million. NY is doing great! But SF (and the wider Bay Area) holds a serious lead. And a bigger one if you look at cash instead of rounds. https://t.co/ruMiqkYcwn
seed deals in 2024 SF > NYC Seed needs to include SAFEs these days in order to be meaningful - and SF has a strong lead there. Besides, isn't the right comparison NYC vs the Bay Area? (data based on Carta companies, using metropolitan statistical areas, cc: @shaig) https://t.co/0qiLc4fR0z
According to Pitchbook data shared below, NYC is ahead of SF in the # of seed deals so far in '24. Shai also said NYC has grown 4X over 13 yrs & SF grew 2X over 13 yrs. https://t.co/aUpiFpHXPk
