Australia Expels Iranian Envoy, Moves to Blacklist IRGC Over Arson Attacks
Australia expelled Iran’s ambassador and suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran after domestic intelligence concluded that Tehran directed at least two antisemitic attacks on Australian soil. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) investigations provided “credible evidence” linking the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to arson attacks on Jewish sites in Sydney and Melbourne last year. ASIO traced payments from overseas intermediaries to local criminals who allegedly set fire to Lewis’ Continental Kitchen, a kosher restaurant in Sydney’s Bondi district on 20 October 2024, and the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne on 6 December 2024. No casualties were reported, but the incidents caused significant damage and were declared terrorist acts. Two men have already been charged over the Melbourne blaze, and police say further arrests are possible. Canberra gave Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three other Iranian diplomats seven days to leave—Australia’s first expulsion of an ambassador since World War II—and warned citizens to avoid travel to Iran after closing its Tehran mission. Legislation will be introduced to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organisation, aligning Australia with the United States and Canada. Tehran rejected the allegations as “baseless” and threatened reciprocal action, while Australian officials dismissed suggestions that Israeli pressure influenced the decision. Albanese said additional Iranian-directed plots remain under investigation and vowed further measures if new evidence emerges.
