Australian authorities say 19-year-old surfer Darcy Deefholts was found alive on North Solitary Island, an uninhabited nature reserve roughly 12 kilometres off Wooli on the New South Wales Mid North Coast, after spending the night stranded at sea. Deefholts left home on Wednesday afternoon for what was expected to be a routine surf but failed to return, prompting relatives to alert police. New South Wales Police, backed by Marine Rescue units from Wooli and Coffs Harbour and local volunteers, mounted an air-and-sea search that located the teenager around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. The surfer was transported to Grafton Base Hospital, where health officials said he is in stable condition. His father, Terry Deefholts, described the rescue as a “one in a million” outcome, while search coordinators noted it was the first time someone missing in the area’s often perilous waters had been found alive.
