A lion mauled a woman in her 50s at Darling Downs Zoo in regional Queensland on Sunday morning, severing one of her arms. Emergency services were called to the privately run park near Toowoomba at about 8:30 a.m., and the victim was airlifted to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition. Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls said the woman had lost her arm and was "recovering well" after initial surgery, with further operations scheduled. The zoo said the victim is a long-time acquaintance of the facility who has routinely observed keepers working in the carnivore enclosure over the past 20 years and is familiar with safety protocols. Owner Steve Robinson described the attack as "inexplicable," noting that the lion never left its enclosure and that no other staff or visitors were in danger. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors are investigating the circumstances of the incident. The zoo closed to the public on Sunday and Monday and intends to reopen on Tuesday. Management stressed that the lion will not be euthanised or otherwise punished.
