A male lion named Zeus escaped its enclosure at the Land of Lions animal park in Manavgat, Antalya, at about 03:21 on 6 July. Roughly one kilometre from the facility, the animal attacked 53-year-old farmer Süleyman Kır, who was sleeping in a pistachio field near the D-400 highway. Kır sustained head, shoulder and leg wounds but managed to fend the lion off before being taken to hospital, where he remains under treatment. Gendarmerie, police, National Parks officers and zoo staff mounted a large-scale search using drones and sealed off the surrounding forested area. Authorities said the lion could not be safely tranquilised; it was located several hours later and shot dead to eliminate further risk to residents and tourists in the Mediterranean resort district. Manavgat municipality has since sealed the Land of Lions park, which advertises a collection of more than 30 big cats. The Antalya Governor’s Office and the 6th Regional Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks have opened parallel investigations into how the animal escaped and whether the facility met safety standards. Legal action against the operators is under consideration, officials said.
