A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured on Sunday afternoon when a roughly two-metre-long shark bit him while he was swimming close to shore at Cabarita Beach on the far-north coast of New South Wales. Dramatic video released overnight shows bystanders pulling the teen onto a surfboard as a shark circles metres away. Off-duty paramedics applied a tourniquet to stem heavy bleeding from the boy’s right arm, wrist and leg before he was airlifted by Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Gold Coast University Hospital. Authorities said he remains in a serious but stable condition. A second helicopter search failed to locate the animal, and the beach has been closed for at least 24 hours while officials monitor the area. The incident is the third reported shark attack in recent days, following bites on a nine-year-old girl in Florida and a student in North Carolina. NSW Surf Lifesaving said seasonal whale migration is drawing more sharks closer to the state’s coastline, and urged swimmers to follow local safety advisories.
Dramatic new footage has captured the moment a 16-year-old boy was mauled by a shark at Cabarita Beach, as earlier vision showed the predator trailing rescuers to shore after the terrifying attack.
