Bangladesh’s interim administration has directed officials to accelerate the recruitment of headmasters for about 32,000 vacant positions in government-run primary schools. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus told a meeting on 14 July that the Public Service Commission must issue an immediate notification so qualified and experienced candidates can be appointed without delay. Yunus said stronger school leadership is essential to lift classroom performance and asked ministries to integrate multimedia facilities and gender-sensitive design—such as including at least one female architect on every school construction committee—into future projects. He also called for clearer rules governing teacher transfers to curb lobbying for urban postings. In a related move, the Finance Ministry on 15 July announced plans to elevate primary-school headmasters to the 10th grade of the national pay scale. The raise is intended to make the posts more attractive as the government races to close the leadership gap in the sector. Education officials say the prolonged shortage of headmasters has weakened supervision and instructional quality across the country’s roughly 65,000 primary schools. Authorities aim to complete the hiring process this year, aligning the appointments with broader efforts to upgrade classroom technology and teaching standards.
