Torrential monsoon rain has triggered severe flooding in Bangladesh’s Feni district, where the local meteorological office logged 439–440 millimetres of rainfall in 24 hours through Wednesday, the highest single-day total ever recorded in the district. The deluge, compounded by water rushing in from India’s Tripura state, caused flood-control embankments along the Muhuri, Kuhua and Silonia rivers to give way at 15 points. Water Development Board data show the Muhuri River flowing 1.57 metres above the danger mark after a 6.92-metre rise within 15 hours. At least 30 villages in Fulgazi and Parshuram upazilas have been inundated, disrupting electricity supply as substations were submerged. Authorities have converted 131 schools into temporary shelters, moving around 150 residents so far, and have earmarked Tk 6.5 lakh in relief funds and 400 food packets. Some 2,500 trained volunteers are on alert while the meteorological service warns of further moderate to heavy rain later this week.
