Heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread flooding and landslides across northern and western China, as well as along the China-Nepal border, resulting in multiple casualties, missing persons, and significant infrastructure damage. In China, the annual 'Plum Rains' triggered flash floods and landslides, prompting the mobilization of thousands of rescue workers. Beijing's Miyun district recorded over 315 millimeters of rainfall from July 26-27, leading to severe flooding, landslides, and the evacuation of more than 4,000 residents. In Hebei province, a landslide caused by heavy rains killed four people and left eight others missing. Authorities in Beijing issued red alerts for rainstorms and flooding, closed tourist attractions, and activated a Level 1 emergency response. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for all-out efforts to protect lives and property amid these disasters. Along the China-Nepal border, torrential rains caused the Bhote Koshi River to flood, washing away the main 'Friendship Bridge' (also referred to as the Miteri Bridge) connecting the two countries. The disaster resulted in at least nine confirmed deaths and around 19 to over two dozen people reported missing, including six Chinese nationals and multiple Nepali citizens. Rescue operations are ongoing, with local authorities and the Chinese embassy in Nepal involved in the efforts. The flooding disrupted trade and transportation across the border, and 485 people were rescued while 20 remain missing in Nepal's Rasuwa district. These events highlight the severe impact of the monsoon season on the region, with authorities continuing emergency responses to mitigate further risks.
