A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has caused continuous heavy rainfall and stormy winds across various regions in Bangladesh and parts of India, including Kolkata. Southern Bengal and Kolkata have experienced heavy downpours leading to waterlogging and infrastructural damage such as a large tree falling on Tarak Pramanik Road in North Kolkata. In Bangladesh, areas like Feni town have been inundated, with the Muhuri River swelling and flash flood warnings issued. Feni recorded 406 millimeters of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The persistent rain has also disrupted life in Khulna, causing flooding and damage to historical buildings, including the roof collapse of the Khulna Sub-Registry Office, which led to the soaking of valuable documents. In Cox's Bazar's Teknaf upazila, at least 40 villages have been flooded due to continuous rain and hill torrents. The hilly district of Khagrachhari faces an increased risk of landslides, particularly in areas such as Shalbon and Sabujbagh. Educational institutions in four upazilas of Noakhali have been closed on July 9 and 10 due to severe weather conditions. Meteorologists forecast that heavy rainfall will continue through Tuesday night and into Wednesday afternoon across most districts of the Chittagong division and Tripura state in India. Kolkata Municipal Corporation is actively working to mitigate waterlogging issues amid ongoing heavy rains.
