Matchroom Boxing said on 9 July that Mexico’s Francisco Rodriguez Jr returned an “adverse analytical finding” in a post-fight test conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association following his upset victory over Britain’s Galal Yafai on 21 June in Birmingham. The sample was collected on the night the 31-year-old claimed the interim WBC flyweight title. Rodriguez dominated the 12-round contest, dropping the former Olympic gold medallist in the final round and winning by scores of 119-108, 119-108 and 118-109. CompuBox data show he landed 575 of 1,089 punches, the highest recorded output in the division’s history. The British Boxing Board of Control and the WBC have opened investigations that could see the result reversed to a no-contest and the belt stripped if a forthcoming B-sample corroborates the initial finding. Rodriguez also faces a possible suspension under anti-doping rules. The case emerges less than a month after fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia’s B-sample confirmed the presence of exogenous testosterone from a 4 May win over Bruno Surace in Riyadh, underscoring mounting scrutiny of performance-enhancing drug use in professional boxing.
