Mexican super-bantamweight boxer Pedro Antonio “Tony” Rodríguez was found dead in his Phoenix, Arizona, hotel room early Sunday, only hours after losing a six-round bout to U.S. fighter Phillip Vella at the American Royal Palace arena. He was 37. Hotel staff discovered Rodríguez’s body when he failed to appear for transport to the airport, according to local media reports. His wife, Karla Valenzuela, said she had spoken with him by video call shortly after the fight, during which he told her he planned to buy dinner before an early-morning departure. Phoenix police have opened an investigation and ordered an autopsy; the cause of death has not been determined. Promoter Del Sol Boxing and Vella both issued condolences, while urging the public to await the findings of the authorities.
