Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro briefly left the Brasília home where he has been under house arrest since early August after the Supreme Federal Court authorised him to spend up to eight hours at Hospital DF Star for medical tests on Saturday. Bolsonaro remained at the clinic for about five hours, undergoing endoscopy, tomography, ultrasound and an echocardiogram. A medical bulletin said the 70-year-old showed persistent esophagitis and gastritis and a residual image of two recent lung infections, conditions doctors will treat with medication at home. Surgeon Claudio Birolini, who oversaw the exams, said confinement is hurting the ex-president’s health. Bolsonaro wore an electronic ankle monitor and was escorted by the Federal District’s penitentiary service throughout the visit. The former leader must file proof of his hospital attendance within 48 hours, under terms set by Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Bolsonaro’s house-arrest order stems from his breach of a court ban on using social media, separate from the Supreme Court case that accuses him of plotting to overturn his 2022 electoral defeat. Hearings in that trial are slated for 2–12 September and could carry a prison sentence of up to 40 years if he is found guilty.
