Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security has raised the age classification of Instagram, declaring the social-media app “not recommended for minors under 16.” The order, published in the Diário Oficial da União on 11 June, reverses a 2021 guideline that set the threshold at 14. Regulators said routine monitoring found material involving sexuality, violence and drug use that could harm younger users’ psychological development, and warned that Meta may face compliance checks if the new rating is not reflected in app stores and parental-control tools. In a separate move to bolster online child safety, Roblox on 17 July introduced an age-verification system that will require users to submit a video selfie or government ID before they can join unfiltered text and voice chats. The measure, developed with identity-verification firm Persona, supports a new “Trusted Connections” feature available only to users confirmed as over 13. Roblox said biometric data from the scans will be erased within 30 days and that all conversations will continue to be monitored for predatory or other harmful behavior. The two actions underscore mounting regulatory and industry pressure worldwide to tighten safeguards for minors on popular social-media and gaming platforms.
