Meta Platforms said on 23 July it has deleted about 635,000 Instagram and Facebook accounts tied to sexualising children, including roughly 135,000 profiles that left explicit comments or requested images and another 500,000 linked accounts. The purge accompanies a new package of child-safety measures for Instagram and, in some cases, Facebook and Messenger. Teen users will now see the month and year an account was created when chatting, and can block and report a user with a single tap. Meta is also extending its strictest message-filter and ‘Hidden Words’ settings to adult-run accounts that primarily feature children, while its recommendation algorithms will ‘avoid’ showing those pages to adults previously flagged as suspicious. Comments from such adults will be hidden by default. The company said teenagers blocked 1 million accounts and reported another 1 million in June after seeing safety notices. The moves come as Meta faces lawsuits from dozens of U.S. states alleging its products harm young people and as Congress revisits the Kids Online Safety Act, which would impose a duty of care on social-media platforms.
