Brazil’s Federal Police has asked Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for additional time to complete Inquiry 4,995, which investigates licensed congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro’s activities in the United States. The request, filed on 3 July, follows difficulties in locating the lawmaker for questioning and seeks to extend a probe opened on 26 May at the request of the Prosecutor-General’s Office. Investigators are examining whether the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro sought U.S. government sanctions against Moraes and other Brazilian officials, conduct that could constitute coercion in legal proceedings, obstruction of a criminal investigation involving an alleged criminal organisation and attempted violent abolition of the democratic state. While living in the United States since February, Eduardo Bolsonaro has publicly said he is working to penalise Brazilian authorities and has declared himself “100 percent ready” to run for the presidency in 2026. As part of the inquiry, the Federal Police questioned Jair Bolsonaro, who told officers he transferred R$2 million to his son in May to support the family abroad. The amount was reportedly drawn from funds the former president raised in 2023 to pay fines related to pandemic-era violations. Moraes will now decide whether to grant the extension; no deadline has been set for a ruling.
