Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said in a decision released on 9 July that Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro “continues to interfere and obstruct” the criminal case AP 2.668/DF, in which his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, is charged over the alleged 2022 coup plot. Moraes ordered that a video shared by the lawmaker on 29 June—showing Congressman Gustavo Gayer criticising the investigations during a rally on Avenida Paulista—be added to the case file as evidence of attempted interference. The ruling, signed on 1 July, also directs the Prosecutor-General’s Office to state its view on Eduardo Bolsonaro’s conduct and extends by 60 days a parallel investigation opened in May at the request of the Federal Police. The inquiry examines whether the deputy has coerced witnesses, obstructed probes and sought to abolish the democratic rule of law, offences that carry prison sentences of up to 12 years. Eduardo Bolsonaro has been living in the United States, where investigators say he lobbied for sanctions against Brazilian officials, including Moraes. In testimony to the Federal Police, Jair Bolsonaro acknowledged sending R$2 million to his son on 13 May, money he said came from the R$17 million raised in 2023 to pay his own legal fines. Moraes’s latest order keeps pressure on the Bolsonaro family as the Supreme Court moves toward closing arguments in the high-profile coup-plot case.
