Brazil’s left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores filed a supplemental petition on Thursday with the Chamber of Deputies’ Council of Ethics seeking the revocation of Eduardo Bolsonaro’s mandate. The filing, signed by PT leader Lindbergh Farias and acting party chairman Humberto Costa, accuses the licensed lawmaker of lobbying U.S. President Donald Trump for a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, an act the party says undermines national sovereignty and violates parliamentary decorum. According to the document, Bolsonaro acknowledged in a joint public note with commentator Paulo Figueiredo that he had held “intense dialogue” with Trump administration officials to press for the import duty, which Washington announced on 9 July. PT lawmakers argue the statement amounts to a confession that the congressman conspired with a foreign power to damage Brazil’s economy and interfere in domestic judicial proceedings related to alleged coup plotting after the 2022 elections. PT also plans to ask the Supreme Federal Court to open a separate investigation. If the Council of Ethics accepts the complaint, Eduardo Bolsonaro could face a vote in the full Chamber that may strip him of his seat. The move comes amid broad political backlash in Brasília to the looming tariff, which the Lula administration has vowed to contest.
