Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Tuesday ordered the Federal District’s penal police to monitor former president Jair Bolsonaro around the clock, citing a “renewed flight risk.” The ruling instructs authorities to deploy permanent response teams and maintain real-time surveillance of Bolsonaro’s Brasília residence, where he has been under house arrest since 4 August for allegedly violating earlier court restrictions. Moraes pointed to evidence uncovered by federal investigators, including a draft letter requesting political asylum from Argentine President Javier Milei that was saved on Bolsonaro’s mobile phone, as well as the former leader’s proximity to foreign embassies. The Prosecutor-General’s Office endorsed the tighter precautions, arguing that continuous oversight is necessary to guarantee Bolsonaro’s presence at future hearings. The decision comes one week before the Supreme Court is due to open a trial on accusations that Bolsonaro helped orchestrate a plot to overturn the 2022 election results. Bolsonaro and his son, Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, were indicted earlier this month on charges that include coercion of judicial proceedings. Bolsonaro’s lawyers deny any intention to flee and say the additional measures are politically motivated.
