Brazilian Senate Approves 'Projeto de Lei de Adultização' to Protect Children Online, Prohibits Bail for Pedophilia
The Brazilian Senate approved a legislative project aimed at protecting children and adolescents from the practice of 'adultization' on the internet. The bill, passed symbolically with only three senators voting against it—Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), and Luís Carlos—establishes rules to restrict the exposure of minors to adult content on social media platforms. Additionally, the legislation prohibits bail for individuals accused of pedophilia. Following Senate approval, the bill will be sent to the Chamber of Deputies and then to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for sanction. The initiative received broad support across political lines, reflecting a national movement to safeguard young internet users. Experts have highlighted the urgency of limiting children's and adolescents' use of social networks, which are designed to be highly engaging and potentially harmful. The law is known as the 'Projeto de Lei de Adultização' and is seen as a significant step in enhancing child protection online in Brazil.
