The organising committee for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) has designated Curupira—a mythical Amazonian forest guardian from Brazilian folklore—as the official mascot for this year’s summit, which will be held in Belém, Pará, from 10 to 21 November. Announcing the choice, the Brazilian federal government said the character’s association with protecting forests aligns with the summit’s intention to place tropical ecosystems at the centre of global climate discussions. The visual identity featuring Curupira was released on 1 July. COP30 president, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, said in a letter to participants that reversing deforestation could “activate massive removals of greenhouse gases” and called on the international community to join Brazil in a collective “mutirão” (joint effort) to combat climate change.
