Fabiano Silva dos Santos, president of the state-owned postal service Correios, submitted a resignation letter to the presidential palace late Friday, 4 July. His departure still requires formal acceptance in a meeting expected next week with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was in Rio de Janeiro for the BRICS summit when the letter arrived. The move follows escalating scrutiny of Correios’ finances. The company reported a record deficit of R$2.6 billion in 2024 and a further loss of roughly R$1.7 billion in the first quarter of 2025, reversing gains made earlier in the decade. Executives have faced inquiries over rising operating costs, mounting supplier arrears and investigations into workplace practices and advertising spending. Silva, an early Lula appointee and long-time ally of the governing Workers’ Party, had been under pressure from Casa Civil minister Rui Costa to cut payroll and close branches. At the same time, Senate President Davi Alcolumbre’s União Brasil party—already in charge of the Ministry of Communications—has lobbied to install its own candidate at the helm of the postal operator. The government has not indicated a timetable or criteria for naming a successor.
