Brazilian Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, and Trade Geraldo Alckmin is leading the government response to a 50% tariff imposed by the United States on Brazilian imports. The Brazilian government has expressed its indignation over the tariff through a letter sent to the White House, emphasizing its readiness to engage in dialogue with U.S. authorities to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution. Alckmin has held meetings with representatives from the industrial and agricultural sectors, as well as six major labor unions, to coordinate the country's response. He also indicated that Brazil may request an extension of the negotiation period with the U.S. to seek a resolution before August. The Brazilian government, including leaders such as Alckmin, Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (Motta), and Chamber of Deputies President Arthur Lira (Alcolumbre), has publicly defended national sovereignty against the tariff measures. In parallel diplomatic efforts, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have discussed deepening economic and trade relations between their countries. Alckmin is scheduled to visit Mexico at the end of August with a delegation of ministers and business leaders to further strengthen bilateral ties. Additionally, Alckmin recently had a productive conversation with U.S. Commerce Secretary Lutnick regarding the tariffs. The Brazilian government has also announced financial support measures, including subsidized loans and ICMS tax credit refunds, for sectors affected by the U.S. tariffs.
