Minister Alexandre de Moraes repeatedly clashed with defence lawyer Jeffrey Chiquini during Supreme Federal Court hearings on 14 July in the criminal action that investigates an alleged attempt to overturn Brazil’s 2022 election result. When Chiquini interrupted, the rapporteur cut him off, stating, “Enquanto eu falo, o senhor fica quieto.” The exchanges occurred as the court heard witnesses connected to the inquiry’s nuclei 2, 3 and 4, which include former presidential aide Filipe Martins. Tensions escalated on 16 July while Chiquini questioned former GSI minister Gonçalves Dias. Moraes deemed the line of questioning accusatory, muted the lawyer’s microphone and said he would formally notify São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas after Chiquini insinuated the governor attended a 2022 meeting at the Palácio da Alvorada to discuss a draft decree aimed at overturning the election. Moraes stressed that Tarcísio is not a target of the investigation. Following the incident, Chiquini announced he will petition the Brazilian Bar Association, alleging the minister violated his procedural rights. The hearings continue through 23 July and have also featured testimony from former Bolsonaro aides Mauro Cid and Senator Ciro Nogueira, who confirmed organising a late-2022 meeting between then-president Jair Bolsonaro and Minister Moraes.
