São Paulo experienced its coldest night and morning of 2025 on June 25, with temperatures dropping to as low as -0.6ºC in the Parelheiros neighborhood in the city's extreme south. The average temperature in the city during this period was around 6ºC. The interior of São Paulo state recorded even lower temperatures, reaching -2.4ºC. This cold spell marked the coldest night in São Paulo in nine years. Following this, a new cold wave began on June 30, affecting the South and Center-West regions of Brazil. By July 1, more than 70 cities in Rio Grande do Sul registered negative temperatures, with the lowest recorded at -5ºC in Getúlio Vargas, accompanied by frost and snow in parts of the South. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro also recorded the coldest afternoons of the year on July 2 and 3, with temperatures in São Paulo not exceeding 12-13ºC, the lowest maximum in five years. The cold front persisted through early July, with forecasts indicating continued low temperatures and frost in the South and Southeast regions. By July 3, at least eight cities in southern Brazil had temperatures below zero, and over 1,200 people in Rio Grande do Sul were relocated to shelters. A city in Santa Catarina set a new 2025 low temperature record of -10.4ºC. The cold wave in Rio Grande do Sul was expected to end on July 4.
