Former Labour leader Lord Neil Kinnock warned that a planned left-wing party being developed by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana would split the progressive vote and benefit Nigel Farage’s right-leaning Reform UK. In a Sky News interview on Sunday, Kinnock suggested the nascent group be called the “Farage Assistance Group,” arguing that any further fragmentation on the left would “only be of assistance to the enemies of Labour and the working class.” Kinnock’s remarks follow Sultana’s announcement last week that she would co-lead a new movement with Corbyn, who was expelled from Labour in 2024. Corbyn has confirmed that discussions on the party’s structure are ongoing, promising “change is coming,” but has not revealed a timetable or policy platform. A June survey by research firm More in Common underscored Kinnock’s concern: in a hypothetical scenario where a Corbyn-led party contested the next election, 10% of voters said they would back it, cutting Labour’s support to 20% and widening Reform UK’s lead to 27%. The poll indicated the new party would draw support primarily from Labour, the Greens and smaller left-of-centre groups.
