The UK government has announced a £500 million initiative called the Best Start in Life strategy, aimed at supporting vulnerable children and families across England. Central to the plan is the establishment of up to 1,000 Best Start Family Hubs by 2028, providing a single point of access to a range of services including parenting support, midwifery, debt advice, youth clubs, and early years education. The hubs will be available in every English council area and build on the legacy of Sure Start centres. Additional measures under the strategy include a £4,500 tax-free payment to attract early years teachers to the 20 most disadvantaged areas, more frequent Ofsted inspections for early years settings (every four years instead of six), stronger links between schools and nurseries, and a simplified childcare system. The government expects the programme to benefit up to 200,000 vulnerable children, aiming to improve the quality, affordability, and accessibility of early years education and provide families with greater support to help children thrive. Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones have emphasized the fund's role in addressing structural poverty and giving children better opportunities.
