The UK government has announced a £500 million investment to establish up to 1,000 Best Start Family Hubs across all English council areas by 2028. These hubs aim to provide comprehensive support services for families, including parenting support, midwifery, debt advice, youth clubs, and activities for child development. The initiative builds on the legacy of the Sure Start programme, focusing on giving children the best start in life and easing the burden on working families. The government’s Best Start in Life Strategy also includes a £4,500 tax-free payment to attract early years teachers to the 20 most disadvantaged areas, more frequent Ofsted inspections for early years settings (every four years instead of six), stronger links between schools and nurseries, and a simplified childcare system. Additionally, the government plans to expand free childcare to further support working parents. The Best Start Family Hubs will act as a single point of access for health, education, and wellbeing services, assisting parents with tasks such as registering births and providing breastfeeding and nutrition advice.
