Apple Inc. said it will promote Sabih Khan, the executive who oversees its global supply chain, to chief operating officer later this month, replacing longtime operations head Jeff Williams in a succession plan the company described as long-planned. Williams, who has steered Apple’s operations for nearly a decade and was once viewed as a possible successor to Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, will remain at the company until he retires late this year. During the transition he will continue to run the design organization, Apple Watch and health initiatives; after his departure, the design team will report directly to Cook. Khan joined Apple in 1995 and was elevated to the executive team in 2019. He is credited with expanding manufacturing beyond China, increasing U.S. production and driving sustainability programs that Apple says have cut its carbon footprint by more than 60%. His elevation comes as the iPhone maker faces supply-chain shifts, heightened regulatory scrutiny and intensifying competition in artificial intelligence. The move extends a broader reshuffle at the $3-trillion company, which is also searching for a new finance chief. Apple shares were little changed in after-hours trading following the announcement.
