Haier-owned GE Appliances said Wednesday it will spend more than $3 billion over the next five years to expand and modernize its U.S. manufacturing network. The program will upgrade 11 plants across Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina, marking the Louisville-based company’s second-largest capital outlay. The initiative is expected to add roughly 1,000 jobs while shifting production of refrigerators, gas ranges and water heaters now made in China and Mexico back to the United States. Gas-range assembly will move to Georgia, several refrigerator models to Alabama, and previously announced washer production to Kentucky. GE Appliances said the investment will enlarge its air-conditioning and water-heating portfolio, increase overall output and shorten supply chains, goals that executives framed as increasingly important after Washington imposed a 145 percent tariff on Chinese goods in April. “Our long-term strategy is about manufacturing close to our customers,” Chief Executive Officer Kevin Nolan said. With the latest commitment, the appliance maker will have invested about $6.5 billion in U.S. factories and distribution facilities since its 2016 acquisition by China’s Haier, supporting more than 4,000 direct jobs and, according to the company, contributing over $30 billion a year to domestic gross domestic product.
