Gita Gopinath, the International Monetary Fund’s first deputy managing director and its second-ranking official, will step down at the end of August to return to Harvard University’s economics faculty, the IMF said Monday. Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, who elevated Gopinath to the deputy role in January 2022 after her tenure as the Fund’s chief economist, said she would name a successor in due course. Gopinath joined the IMF in 2019, becoming the institution’s first female chief economist before assuming the No. 2 post.
