Walmart Inc. said it is expanding its longstanding 10% employee discount to cover almost all grocery categories, including milk, meat and frozen foods, with the change taking effect immediately in stores and online. The benefit, available after 90 days of employment, now encompasses about 95% of regularly priced items across the chain. The discount previously applied year-round only to fresh produce and most general merchandise, with broader food coverage limited to the holiday season. In a memo to the retailer’s roughly 1.6 million U.S. workers, Chief People Officer Donna Morris called the expansion one of the company’s most requested perks and said it is intended to ease household budgets. The move comes as fresh U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports and other cost pressures threaten to reignite grocery inflation. Extending the price cut may also encourage employees to shop more frequently at Walmart and bolster retention, following recent wage increases and a new bonus program for frontline staff. The company is due to report quarterly results on Aug. 21.
