Cameroon’s political establishment is publicly divided over whether President Paul Biya will seek another term in the October 2025 election. Government spokesman René-Emmanuel Sadi said the likelihood of a candidacy was “50–50,” while Jacques Fame Ndongo, who speaks for the ruling RDPC party and also serves as higher-education minister, insisted Biya’s run is “100 % certain.” The conflicting statements expose rifts within the regime as Biya, 92, already the world’s longest-serving head of state outside monarchies, approaches 43 years in power. Opposition figures and some civil-society groups have urged him to step aside, arguing the country needs new leadership ahead of a vote now less than four months away.
