Canada has commenced its first-ever export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the LNG Canada facility located in Kitimat, British Columbia. The initial shipment was loaded onto the Gaslog Glasgow, a vessel chartered by Shell, which holds a 40% working interest in the LNG Canada joint venture. This milestone marks Canada’s entry into the global LNG market, with the first cargo destined for buyers in Asia, including South Korea and Japan. The project is led by Shell and includes partners such as Mitsubishi Corporation and Malaysia’s energy company Petronas, which recently shipped its first LNG cargo to Japan from the same Canadian facility. The LNG Canada project aims to meet rising demand for natural gas in Asia and strengthen energy security in the region. The facility's strategic location on the Pacific coast provides a logistical advantage for shipping to Asian markets. The launch of these exports positions Canada alongside established LNG exporters like the U.S. and Qatar, contributing to diversification of supply amid increasing global energy demand.
