Hanwha Shipping Orders First US LNG Carrier in 50 Years, Built in Korea, US-Flagged, Amid US Shipbuilding Shifts

Hanwha Shipping has placed an order for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier with its affiliate, Hanwha Philly Shipyard, marking the first LNG carrier ordered in the United States in approximately 50 years. This order represents the first LNG carrier under Hanwha ownership at the Philly Shipyard. However, the vessel will not comply with the Jones Act, as it will be substantially constructed overseas in Korea, despite being US-flagged. The LNG carrier is intended to transport US exports to international markets. The development comes amid a turbulent period for US shipbuilding, which has seen both setbacks and progress, including the recent launch of the first Jones Act offshore rock installation vessel in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, new shipbuilding orders at Chinese yards declined by 18% in the first half of 2025, influenced by investigations from the US Trade Representative. China remains the dominant shipbuilding nation globally.
