Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is arranging a trip to Mexico tentatively set for 18 Sept., according to officials familiar with the plans. He is expected to hold bilateral talks with President Claudia Sheinbaum aimed at deepening trade ties and broadening cooperation on key infrastructure projects. The leaders plan to discuss measures to strengthen supply chains, port-to-port trade routes, energy security and the digital economy. Carney’s visit follows an earlier mission by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, who agreed with Mexican counterparts to draft a joint work plan covering the same areas. The outreach comes as both countries navigate heightened economic pressure from Washington. On 1 Aug., U.S. President Donald Trump raised tariffs to 35 % on Canadian goods that fall outside the North American trade pact, while granting Mexico a 90-day reprieve. With 76 % of Canadian exports still bound for the U.S. and a mandatory review of the USMCA due next year, Ottawa is seeking to diversify markets and present a united front with its southern neighbour.
