Two U.S. cruise passengers—a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman—drowned in separate incidents on Friday, Aug. 15, while visiting Carnival Cruise Line’s newly opened Celebration Key resort on Grand Bahama Island, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Police said the man lost consciousness while snorkeling at a beach shortly before noon, and the woman became unresponsive in a swimming pool at about 2:30 p.m. In both cases lifeguards administered CPR, but the victims were pronounced dead by attending doctors. Carnival confirmed that the man had arrived aboard the Mardi Gras and the woman aboard the Carnival Elation, each traveling with family. Autopsies are planned to determine the precise causes of death, and Bahamian authorities are leading the investigations. The company said its lifeguards and medical staff “responded promptly” and that its care team is assisting the families. Celebration Key, a $600 million destination featuring lagoons, pools and a beach club exclusively for Carnival guests, welcomed its first visitors on July 19. The private island is designed to handle up to two of the cruise line’s largest ships simultaneously, with expansion under way to double that capacity. The dual fatalities occurred less than a month after the resort opened.
