Vietnamese authorities on Sunday said 35 people have been confirmed dead and four remain missing after a tourist boat capsized in Ha Long Bay during a sudden thunderstorm the previous afternoon. The government revised the death toll downward from an earlier figure of 38 and lowered the estimated number of people on board to 49—46 passengers and three crew—after recovering the sunken vessel. The wooden cruiser, identified by local media as the Wonder Sea, overturned shortly after 2 p.m. local time when strong winds, heavy rain and lightning swept across the UNESCO-listed bay. Most of those on board were families from Hanoi, including roughly 20 children; ten people were rescued alive. More than 300 personnel from the police, border guard, navy and professional dive teams are continuing search operations ahead of the expected landfall of Typhoon Wipha. The storm also felled trees in Hanoi and forced the diversion of nine flights at Noi Bai International Airport. The accident is one of the deadliest in the popular tourist destination since 2011, when 12 people died in another sinking. Authorities have promised a full investigation into safety procedures for cruise operators in the bay.
