The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended invitations to 534 artists, technologists and executives to join its ranks, marking the organisation’s largest intake since 2020 and one of the biggest classes in its history. If every invitee accepts, overall membership will climb to 11,120, including 10,143 voting members. The 2025 class is 41% women, 45% drawn from under-represented racial or ethnic communities and 55% based outside the United States, representing talent from 60 countries. High-profile additions span the Academy’s 19 branches and include pop star and “Wicked” actor Ariana Grande, 2025 acting Oscar winners Mikey Madison (“Anora”) and Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), late-night hosts Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel, Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres and Palestinian documentarian Hamdan Ballal. In total, the list features 91 recent Oscar nominees and 26 winners. Notably absent is Spanish performer Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly trans Best Actress nominee for “Emilia Pérez,” whose past social-media posts sparked controversy earlier this year. It is unusual for a first-time Oscar nominee to be omitted from the following year’s invitation list. “These exceptionally talented individuals have made indelible contributions to our global filmmaking community,” Academy chief executive officer Bill Kramer and president Janet Yang said in a joint statement, adding that new members who accept will be eligible to vote for the 2026 Oscars.
