Chicago police have reclassified a reported sexual assault in the city’s Lakeview neighbourhood as “not bona fide,” indicating investigators no longer believe the crime occurred as initially described. Earlier on Monday, police said a 26-year-old woman told officers she had been approached by two men and two women about 10:45 p.m. Sunday in an alley off the 3800 block of North Wilton Avenue, a few blocks from the Chicago Pride Parade route. She reported that the men physically and sexually assaulted her before the group fled in a vehicle, and she was taken to Thorek Memorial Hospital. Detectives opened an investigation and issued a public appeal for information. By late afternoon, the department announced that the incident was “not bona fide,” effectively closing the case without arrests. The agency did not disclose what led to the change in its assessment.
