Ethan Guo, a 19-year-old Chinese-American pilot and social media influencer from Memphis, Tennessee, was detained by Chilean authorities after making an unauthorized solo landing in Antarctica. Guo was attempting to fly to all seven continents to raise $1 million for childhood cancer research, specifically benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He departed from Punta Arenas, Chile, but altered his flight plan without notifying air traffic control, violating the Antarctic Treaty regulations and Chilean airspace rules. Prosecutors have charged him with submitting a false flight plan. Guo reportedly landed at the Rodolfo Marsh Chilean military base in Antarctica and is currently under house arrest, awaiting a commercial flight back to Punta Arenas. Chilean authorities have stated that Guo must pay for his return flight and have dismissed any plans to transfer him out of Antarctica. The incident has caused delays in Guo’s attempt to set a world flight record as the youngest pilot to fly solo to all seven continents. His journey has attracted a large following on social media, with over one million followers tracking his progress.
