Zhi Dong Zhang, a Chinese national accused of being a key chemical supplier and fentanyl link for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel, escaped from his house arrest in Mexico City in July 2025. Zhang, also known by the alias "Brother Wang," had been detained since October 2024 and was under the custody of the Mexican National Guard. Despite the surveillance, he managed to flee from his residence in the Cuajimalpa area. Authorities later recaptured him. The escape has drawn public attention to the judicial decision that allowed Zhang to be placed under house arrest. Mexico City's President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly blamed the judge responsible for granting Zhang the house arrest, criticizing the decision as lacking justification and highlighting concerns about possible judicial corruption. The Federal Prosecutor's Office (FGR) was expected to provide further information on the case. Zhang is accused of drug trafficking and money laundering and is considered a crucial intermediary in the logistics of chemical precursors used by the cartels.
