American pilot and social-media influencer Ethan Guo, 19, has been stranded at Chile’s Lieutenant Rodolfo Marsh Base in Antarctica since late June after landing his Cessna 182Q without authorization. Prosecutors said Guo filed false flight-plan information, securing clearance only for a fly-over of Punta Arenas before continuing south in apparent pursuit of his bid to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents while raising money for childhood cancer research. On 29 June Chilean authorities charged Guo with providing false data to air-traffic controllers and conducting an unauthorized landing. A Santiago judge on Monday dropped the criminal case under a deal that requires the teenager to donate US$30,000 to a Chilean children’s cancer foundation within 30 days, leave the country as soon as weather allows and stay out of Chilean territory for three years. Guo must also cover the cost of securing his aircraft and his own upkeep during the unexpected stay. Severe Antarctic winter conditions and concerns about the Cessna’s airworthiness have so far prevented Guo’s departure. Prosecutor Cristián Crisoto said the single-engine plane "does not have the capabilities to make a flight" at present, though Guo has indicated he is exploring options to fly the aircraft out once authorities grant approval.
