Operations at Vancouver International Airport were briefly suspended on Tuesday after authorities received a report that a Cessna 172 had been hijacked and was heading toward the facility. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the alert came in at about 1:10 p.m. local time, prompting air-traffic controllers to halt arriving flights while they tracked the aircraft circling over the airport. The plane, operated by the Victoria Flying Club, had taken off earlier from Victoria International Airport on Vancouver Island with only the suspected hijacker on board. It landed safely at Vancouver at 1:43 p.m., where police surrounded the aircraft and arrested the pilot without incident. No injuries or damage were reported. The shutdown for arrivals lasted 39 minutes and forced nine inbound flights to divert to other airports, according to Vancouver International. Departures continued, but the airport warned travelers of residual delays. Investigators have not disclosed a motive and said the inquiry remains ongoing.
