Advanced Micro Devices said on 11 Aug. that it has obtained initial U.S. government licences allowing it to ship some artificial-intelligence chips to Chinese customers. The company did not disclose which processors or buyers are covered, but described the permissions as the first set of approvals under Washington’s export-control regime. The licences offer AMD a limited path back into the world’s largest semiconductor market after the United States tightened curbs on advanced chip exports aimed at restricting Beijing’s access to cutting-edge AI capabilities. AMD added that it is continuing to engage with regulators on additional authorisations and will comply with all applicable restrictions.
