China has formally protested what it describes as repeated incidents of unwarranted interrogation, harassment and repatriation of Chinese students arriving at United States border checkpoints, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular briefing in Beijing on 22 August. Mao urged Washington to “thoroughly investigate and correct its errors” and to live up to earlier commitments by U.S. leaders to welcome Chinese students. She added that Beijing has lodged diplomatic representations over each reported case and “will continue to take measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests” of its citizens. The ministry said China “will not allow any Chinese citizen traveling to the U.S. to be subjected to unfair treatment” and called on U.S. authorities to end what it views as groundless screening practices. U.S. officials have not yet publicly responded to the latest complaint.
