Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on 18 August for his first visit to India in more than three years, holding successive meetings with External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and, on 19 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The trip comes ahead of Modi’s planned attendance at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin later this month, and during the 75th year of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Jaishankar told Wang that lasting peace along the Line of Actual Control is essential for any broader improvement in ties. The two sides subsequently convened the 24th round of Special Representatives talks on the border question, led by Doval and Wang. Doval said relations are on an “upward trend” and that the frontier has remained quiet, while Wang called the current stability at the border a positive foundation for future engagement. Indian officials said Wang assured New Delhi that Beijing will remove recently imposed export restrictions on fertilisers, rare-earth magnets and tunnel-boring machines—items critical to India’s agriculture, electronics and infrastructure sectors. Local media reported that shipments of rare-earth magnets have already resumed, though details of licensing changes were not disclosed. Wang stressed that China and India should regard each other as partners rather than rivals and work toward a multipolar international order. The visit, coupled with the expected meeting between Modi and President Xi Jinping at the Tianjin summit, signals a concerted effort by both Asian powers to repair ties damaged by the 2020 border clash and subsequent trade frictions.
