China’s Ministry of Commerce said the United States has lifted a number of trade and export restrictions on Chinese goods and technologies, describing the move as a welcome step and urging Washington to pursue “dialogue and cooperation” rather than coercive tactics. Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters on 4 July that both governments should build on a consensus reached at talks in London earlier this year and move quickly to roll back remaining curbs. Commerce Minister Wang Wentao expanded on that message on 18 July, noting that bilateral economic ties have survived multiple “storms” since 2018 and remain mutually indispensable. While acknowledging that “differences and frictions are inevitable,” Wang argued that decoupling “will not succeed” and said consultation is the best way to resolve disputes. The renewed diplomatic tone carried into a 30 July meeting in Stockholm, where Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng reported “in-depth, candid and constructive” exchanges with U.S. counterparts on issues ranging from market access to technology controls. He called on Washington to deepen consensus and enhance policy predictability. On the same day in Beijing, Wang met a delegation led by U.S.-China Business Council chair Rajesh Subramaniam, reiterating that China welcomes American companies and hopes the United States will “meet China halfway.” The minister stressed that both countries remain important trade partners despite the 145 % U.S. tariff on many Chinese imports enacted in April. Although Beijing framed the lifting of some restrictions as a positive signal, neither side has disclosed details of the specific measures withdrawn or outlined a timeline for additional relief. Further talks are expected as both governments seek to stabilise the world’s largest bilateral trading relationship.
